North of the Mamanuca islands is the Yasawa Islands chain of 16 volcanic islands and many teeny ones stretching 80 km in a north west direction. Lying in a rain shadow behind Viti Levu, drier conditions create the spectacular blazing colors of the Pacific dream. ('Blue Lagoon' was filmed here.) There are a few luxury resorts on these islands, including Yasawa Island Resort and Turtle Island Resort, but most visitors experience the Yasawas on popular cruises that ply between them.

Turtle Island
[Back to Top of Page]
“ ....as close to heaven on earth as you're likely to get."
We are enroute by float plane (never mind that the pilot is barefoot) to a remote destination in the South Pacific called Turtle Island, part of the Yasawa Island Group in the Republic of Fiji. A string of ancient volcanic lagoons and jagged islands, mostly uninhabited, passes below. Born of violent eruptions, they are now the peaceful paradise home to owner Richard Evanson.
"The Blue Lagoon"
[Back to Top of Page]

Richard Evanson acquired the island in 1972 as a personal hideaway. Some years later he and his Fijian neighbors began to extend their hospitality to guests seeking an enchanting respite from their usual cares. Turtle Island is a Fiji Five Star Resort offering accommodation to only 14 couples on this 500 acre private island.
The location for the film "The Blue Lagoon," Turtle Island is the perfect place for a honeymoon, anniversary or just a well deserved holiday. As close to paradise as can be found, one can only say that it is helplessly romantic, a place for lovers and honeymooners, and for anyone who wants to drown themselves in the simple joys of a "perfect paradise."
The Blue Lagoon itself is as clear as new blown glass and offers spectacular displays and diversions.
Living coral reefs of blue, green and yellow, called "fringing reefs" ring the island and
are home to colorful galaxies of fish, from lion to angel to butterfly fish. Squid and octopi live here too, as well as sea cucumbers rays and crabs. Don snorkel gear and go eye-to-eye with a green or hawksbill turtle.
Romantic, intimate, comfortable and friendly almost beyond belief, Turtle Island is a world entirely beyond time and obligations.
For adventurous island wanderers looking for a private paradise, this is it.

Vatulele
[Back to Top of Page]
Vatulele is located 25 minutes flying time (south-west) from Nadi airport. The island has 4 villages with a native (subsistence) population of 900. Famous for Tapa cloth (made from bark) and the legendary Red Prawns. Fijians are generally regarded as the "aristocrats" of the South Pacific and are noted for their friendly and gregarious nature.
On Vatulele there is no western development apart from the Vatulele Island Resort which consists of 18 bures (villas) located on a magnificent white sand beach and lagoon. Mostly covered with dense jungle and surrounded by spectacular coral reef.
The crystal waters of Vatulele invite every kind of water-based activities, including sailing, paddling, snorkeling, fishing and diving.
Even swimming takes on a new dimension here. You can enjoy hikes into the jungle, where you can learn about native plant medicines, see ancient petroglyphs, visit important archaeological sites, or swim in underground caves. You can also arrange intimate picnics on a secluded beach away from the resort - or even reserve your own "Robinson Crusoe" island for that special romantic interlude.

Viti Levu/Nadi[Back to Top of Page]
Nadi , the main gateway on the big island of Viti Levu, is cosmopolitan with an Indian flavor thanks to its large Indian population. It has a few delicious and reasonable Indian restaurants, some shopping and a range of hotels.
About 12 1/2 miles south of Nadi you reach the Coral Coast which stretches 62 miles to Pacific Harbor. This attractive sweep of beaches, secluded bays and villages is a popular tourist destination with multi story international hotels as well as simple bure accommodation. It's a good spot for windsurfing, snorkeling, coral viewing and excursions to southern islands.
Suva is the capital and less o
f a tourist town than Nadi. It perches on a hilly peninsula overlooking the harbor, a mix of tall modern buildings and old colonial architecture. It's a vital cosmopolitan place with many restaurants, traditional markets and one of the best museums in the South Pacific. Colo i Suva Forest Park, 10 miles from Suva, offers views, forest walks and bathing in a crystal stream.
The largest island, Viti Levu (pronounced Vee-tee Lay-vu) is home to 70% of the population (about 580,000) and is the hub of
the entire archipelago. It measures 91 miles long and 66 miles wide and has an area of 4011 square miles. In the realm of Pacific islands, it is exceeded in size only by New Caledonia and the Big Island of Hawaii
Viti Levu has it all...cities, offshore resorts, cane fields, nightlife, low life, villages and as elsewhere in Fiji, no shortage of friendly local people

Vanua Levu
[Back to Top of Page]
Only about an hour's flight from Nadi or Suva, this large island takes you back in time. There are a few really chic resorts, like the magnificent new dive and eco-retreat opened by Jacques Cousteau . But mostly it is backpacker terrain, with few tourists, good local transport and extremely friendly villages
Vanua Levu (pronounce Va-new-ah Lay-vu), with a population of approximately 130,000, is the second largest island of the Fiji archipelago.
With an area of 2138 square miles , it is slightly larger than half the size of Viti Levu. The island measures 112 miles long and has an average width of 20 miles. The island is rugged, untrammeled and the coast is surrounded by an extensive system of coral reefs. Once a center for the copra (the dried white flesh of the coconut from which coconut oil is extracted) trade, sugar cultivation is the most important industry and large cane fields can be seen on the dry western and northern coasts. There is a system of roads but they are not as extensive nor as well maintained as on the main island of Viti Levu (except for the newly paved road linking Savusavu and Labasa).
Although very near Viti Levu in distance (40 miles northeast) it is less developed and less frequented by tourists. Vanua Levu thus offers the guest an ideal opportunity to observe local traditions and culture, relatively untarnished by tourism. The largest centers of population are Labasa and Savusavu, but they are small towns compared to the larger urban centers on Viti Levu.
Labasa, largely an Indian community, is a thriving business center tied to the sugar industry. Savusavu, a smaller less developed town, is gaining popularity as a dive destination and yachting community. It has a truly magnificent bay and a friendly local yacht club. One can travel to Vanua Levu either by flying to Savusavu or Labasa , or via local ferry boat from Viti Levu.

Taveuni
[Back to Top of Page]
Lying east of Vanua Levu is the garden island. The reefs off Taveuni offer some of the world's best diving, and the interior is exciting with volcanoes, hundreds of waterfalls and verdant forests.
Taveuni (pronounced Tah-vee-ew-nee), the garden island of Fiji, is rugged, wet, verdant and pristine. It lies only seven kilometers off the southeast coast of Vanua Levu and is 26 miles long and averages about 7 miles wide.
Taveuni is a archetypically beautiful tropical island, thick with vegetation and resplendent with tropical flowers. It offers the visitor a rich natural history, in particular, a fine array of birdlife.
Fortunately (unlike other islands in the Fiji
archipelago) the mongoose was never introduced to Taveuni and consequently many of the birds that have vanished on Viti Levu and Vanua Levu still thrive on the Garden Island. Once the home of fierce warriors, Taveuni residents still exude pride and confidence in their step.
